  • Anorexia Nervosa
    Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder and a mental health condition.
  • Addictions
    Addiction is not having control over doing, taking or using something, to the point that it may be harmful.
  • Acute
    In medicine, refers to an intense illness or affliction of abrupt onset.
  • Admission
    The point at which a person begins an episode of care (see definition), e.g. arriving at an inpatient ward.
  • Adherence
    The extent to which a patient's behaviour (in terms of taking medication, following a diet, modifying habits, or attending clinics) coincides with medical or health advice.
  • Advocate
    An advocate is someone who helps people express their point of view in difficult situations where they might feel vulnerable or overwhelmed.
  • Alzheimer's disease
    Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia, which describes the loss of mental abilities, such as memory and reasoning.
  • Anxiety
    A state of uneasiness and apprehension, as about future uncertainties.
  • Approved Social Workers (ASW)
    Have specialist training, and are involved in assessing a person for possible admission to hospital under the Mental Health Act, and have overall responsibility for co-ordinating the process of assessment.
  • Agoraphobia
    The World Health Organisation defines agoraphobia as a cluster of phobias (irrational fears) related to leaving home, entering shops, being in crowds and public places, or travelling alone on buses, trains or planes.
  • Antidepressants
    Both serotonin and noradrenaline are important in the areas of the brain that control or regulate mood and thinking. These two chemical messengers are not as effective or active as normal in the brain of someone who is depressed.
  • Adult Services
    The Adult Service is for adults aged between 17 and 65 who suffer from serious and complex mental health problems.
  • Associate director
    A senior manager in our organisation who has responsibility for a number of our services.
  • Associate medical director (AMD)
    A clinical member of staff (doctor, nurse, occupational therapist, psychologist) who has responsibility for a number of our clinical services, working alongside the associate director.
